Sarga 52

"kṣamasva rōṣaṁ tyaja rākṣasēṁdra"- means 'Oh, King of Rakshasas, please forgive. Give up your anger'

These are words of Vibhishana. Vibhishana is the younger brother of Ravana. Ravana's mother approached her children and tells them about their step brother Vaisrava, and suggested them follow him and get similar ascetic powers. Ravana vows to better him and performs penance for ten thousand at Gokarna to please Brahma. At the same time Vibhishana too performs penance, following his mother direction. When pleased Brahma asked him to choose his boon , Vibhishana asks for a boon that will help him stay on the path of Righteousness at all times. Such is Vibhishana's commitment to righteousness is what we see in this Sarga.

In Sundarakanda this is the first time we see Vibhishana. Trijata in detailing her dream, mentions Vibhishana. 'ēkaḥ tatra mayā dr̥ṣṭaḥ śvētaḥchatrō vibhīṣaṇaḥ' - 'I saw one with white umbrella, that is Vibhishana'. White is an auspicious color. That means that dream of Trijata indicates good for Vibhishana.

Sita too mentions Vibhishana. Sita said that Vibhishana tried to advise Ravana to return Sita. This tells us that Vibhishana is one who is aware of Sita's abduction. He is one who knows the right and wrong. He was unsuccessful in pushing Ravana to return Sita. Now we see him in an active role.

So, we hear the story of Sarga 52.

tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā vānarasya mahātmanaḥ|
ājñāpayat vadhaṁ tasya rāvaṇaḥ krōthamūrcitaḥ||52.01||

sa|| rāvaṇaḥ mahātmanaḥ vānarasya tasya vacanaṁ śrutvā krōdhamūrchitaḥ tasya vadhaṁ ājñāpayat||

vadhē tasya samājñaptē rāvaṇēna durātmanā|
nivēditavatō dautyaṁ nānumēnē vibhīṣaṇaḥ||52.02||

sa|| durātmanā rāvaṇēna nivēditavataḥ tasya vadhē samājñaptē vibhīṣaṇaḥ dautyaṁ nānu mēnē ||

Rama Tika says - vadha iti| rāvaṇēna vadhē samājñaptaṁ sati dautyaṁ svaniṣṭadūta dharmaṁ nivēditavatō hanūmataḥ vadhē vibhīṣaṇō nānu mēnē anumatiṁ na cakāra|

Vibhishana did not agree with the wicked Ravana's order to kill the one who announced himself ( as a messenger). ||52.02||

This Sarga starts with,"vadhē tasya samājñaptē rāvaṇēna durātmanaḥ",- "When the evil Ravana ordered that one to be killed". Then Vibhishana springs to action.

Vibhishana did not agree with the wicked Ravana's order.
The order was to kill the one who announced himself as a messenger. Vibhishana, who stands by the right course of action, having realized that the Rakshasa king was angry,
started thinking about his course of action.

Vibhishana, skilled in speech having made up his mind,
then spoke to his reverential elder in meaningful and wholesome manner

taṁ rakṣōdhipatiṁ kruddhaṁ tacca kāryamupasthitam|
viditvā ciṁtayāmāsa kāryaṁ kāryavidhau sthitaḥ||52.03||

sa|| kāryavidhau sthitaḥ taṁ rakṣōdhipaṁ kr̥ddhaṁ upasthitaṁ tat kāryaṁ ca viditvā kāryaṁ ciṁtayāmāsa||

niścitārthaḥ tataḥ sāmnā pūjya śatrujidagrajam|
uvāca hita matyarthaṁ vākyaṁ vākya viśāradaḥ||52.04||

sa|| tataḥ niścitārthaḥ śatrujit vākyaviśāradaḥ pūjyaṁ agrajaṁ atyarthaṁ hitaṁ vākyaṁ sāmnā uvāca||

courageous ones keep the anger under control.

na dharmavēdē na ca lōkavr̥ttē
na śāstrabuddhi grahaṇēṣu cāpi|
vidyēta kaścittava vīra tulyaḥ
tvaṁ hyuttamaḥ sarva surāsurāṇām||52.17||

sa|| vīra dharmavādē tava tulyaḥ kaścit na | lōkavr̥ttē (tava tulyaḥ) na| śāstrabuddhi grahaṇēṣucāpi na | tvaṁ sarva sura asurāṇāṁ uttamaḥ hi||

na cāpyasya kapērghātē kaṁcitpaśyāmyahaṁ guṇam|
tē ṣvayaṁ pātyatāṁ daṇḍōyairayaṁ prēṣitaḥ kapiḥ||52.19||

sa|| asya kapēḥ ghātē ahaṁ kiṁcit guṇaṁ na paśyāmi | ayaṁ daṇḍaḥ yaiḥ ayaṁ kapiḥ prēṣitaḥ tēṣu pātyatāṁ||

Rama Tika says - asya kapērghātē kiṁcit guṇaṁ na paśyāmi| ataḥ paraiḥ ayaṁ kapiḥ prēṣitaḥ tēṣu ayaṁ prāṇāṁtaḥ daṇḍaḥ pātyatām||

sa||rājan api ca asmin hatē yaḥ mahōdadhēḥ paraṁ pāraṁ punaḥ iha āgacchēt anyaṁ khēcaraṁ na paśyāmi||

Govindaraja Tika says - asmin hatē sati vr̥ttāṁtaṁ nivēdaka abhāvat rāmalakṣmaṇayōḥ iha āgamana abhāvēna tava śatr̥ kṣayō nasyāt| vimuktē asmin ētasmin nivēdita vr̥ttāṁtayōḥ tayōḥ iha āgamanāt yatnēna tava śatr̥ nāśō bhavēt iti abhiprētyāha|

Govindaraja in his Tika says the correct sequence of Slokas here starts with Sloka ,"parākramōtsāha manasvināṁca", followed by Sloka, "hitāśca śūrāśca" , which is followed by Sloka, "tadēkadēśēna" and Sloka, "niśācarāṇāṁ". Sarga also ends with this Sloka.
